Typical Signs Indicating You Need Interior Pool Resurfacing

The interior finish of your pool will reflect its age. A plaster interior may be the most affordable option, but it is also the least forgiving if the water chemistry is consistently unbalanced. This type of interior will show signs of aging quickly and become pitted and rough sooner than any other concrete pool interior finish. Other indicators of aging that may be present in a plaster interior include stains, chipping, thinning, and small cracks that can eventually lead to leaks.

When aggregate interiors, such as quartz and pebble interiors, begin to age, you may start seeing pits and some loose stones at the bottom of the pool. Additionally, you may also notice loose stones in the skimmer basket.

Pool Resurfacing Options

If you currently have a plaster pool finish, there are three primary finishes available for a “replaster” job: marcite (traditional white plaster), colored quartz aggregate, and pebble.

MARCITE

Marcite, also known as traditional white plaster, is a pool finish made from a mixture of water, Portland cement, and either marble dust, crushed limestone, or silica sand. It provides a smooth and classic appearance to the pool and is the least expensive option. However, it's important to note that it's also the least durable due to its soft finish compared to other options. This makes it more susceptible to the fluctuations of your pool's water chemistry.

QUARTZ

Quartz finishes are quite similar to plaster finishes, but with one main difference: instead of using marble or limestone, quartz is utilized. Quartz is considerably more durable than either of the other two soft stones, giving this finish greater durability and wear resistance. It creates a tough, long-lasting exterior that will provide you peace of mind for years to come. Additionally, since quartz is a reflective material, it has a higher potential for sparkle.

PEBBLE

The surface of a pebble pool is created by applying a layer of specially formulated cement mixed with small pebbles, stones, or glass. This type of pool surface is known for its natural beauty and ability to complement the surrounding environment. Adding glass beads or quartz to the mixture will enhance the sparkle of sunlight and give the pool surface a three-dimensional effect. Pebble surfaces are the most durable, longest lasting pool interior.
